The Recent Criticism of Tony Hibbert and Leon Osman…

Above - Local Toffee Tony Hibbert

After looking around my favourite Everton forum (Grandoldteam.com) I have noticed the sheer amount of criticism of our ‘Right Back’ Tony Hibbert and ‘Midfielder’ Leon Osman, criticism that is not warranted in my eyes.

Both players have come through the great Everton youth-system, the same youth-system that had produced England and Manchester United star Wayne Rooney. Both players grew up in the Liverpool area and have Everton running through their veins, both players have sat in Goodison Park to watch their heroes play week in week out, through thick and thin.

As an Everton fan I have always prided myself on the attitude and devotion of the fans through the dark ages of our footballing history, around the time that Tony Hibbert and Leon Osman would have been sitting in the stands cheering the blue boys on. They’ve dreamt about wearing the blue jersey, coming out onto the green grass of the Goodison playing field whilst ‘Z-Cars’ rips through the atmosphere. Haven’t we all? The desperation to play on the same field your heroes did, whether it be Andreas Limpar or Andy Gray. Out of most of the Everton starting line-up these are the players that still give the team the ‘Grand Old’ feel.

Sure the players aren’t the greatest players in the world, perhaps they are the weakest players in the team, and sure you can’t expect flick-ons, step-overs or amazing free kicks from the lads but there is one thing that you can defiantly expect, and that is heart for the club, a 110% effort every time they play. That is something you can’t expect from players from Spain, South Africa, Nigeria or even Manchester!

Do you really want to see an Everton squad with no local boys?

I feel football clubs have gotten so segregated from their communities in the recent years, lets not turn into a ‘bog-standard team’.

The Lack of Transfer Activity...

Again we've been well disappointed so far, its now Mid-July and whilst clubs like Manchester City, Real Madrid and Manchester United keep on spending us Evertonians are sitting here with a squad at its bare minimum.

Yet we've still released a few players such as Lars Jacobsen, Andy van der Meyde and Nuno Valente. Segundo Castillo has gone back to Red-Star after a terrible spell at the club (Bar for the goal against Standard Liege).

We've been linked to many players again such as Micheal Owen, Kyle Naughton, Obinna and again Joao Moutinho has popped up. So far Owen has gone to Manchester United on a free, it looks like Spurs have got Kyle Naughton wrapped up. As for Joao Moutinho the board again are too tight arsed to invest enough money into the club for a top-international player. I haven't heard about Obinna however in a long time (Exept for my visits to the Grandoldteam forum).

Bill Kenwright has again disappointed us with the lack of transfers. It's plain to see that he does not want to relinquish control of the club we love so much, and no potential investor wants to pay huge sums of cash for no control. You can't blame them in all fairness.

It looks like Lescott could be on his way out with Manchester City bidding £15m today and again getting rejected. Perhaps the lure of £25m might be to much for our board, with the recession and all that. It will be a loss to the club, easily said, unless Moyes can bring in someone again like Lescott for the price we got him from Wolves at 3 years ago.. That I can't see happening.

But a bit of good news, we've gotten Jo back from Manchester City on a season long loan. That'll give a bit of backup at the tiny squad.

Who knows with a fit Yakubu, Saha, Arteta, Baines, Pieenar we can again challenge for 4th place and keep up with flashy cash Manchester City. As Alan Stubbs once said...

"What we've got is a resilience and a team spirit, and you can't buy that."

Who knows?

This season will be an important one for us Blues.
